Salutes Classic 427 Corvettes Chevrolet’s Special ’427 Limited Edition Z06’


Chevrolet announced the 2008 Corvette 427 Limited Edition Z06, a limited-production model that pays homage to the big-block Stingray models of the mid-1960s. The 427 designation refers to the cubic-inch displacement for the highest-performance engines offered between 1966 and ’69 – and is also the cubic-inch equivalent of the Z06’s 7.0L LS7 small-block V-8. The 427 Limited Edition Z06 features a Crystal Red Tintcoat exterior, the first Z06 ever offered with a red metallic tintcoat paint. It also features graphics on the hood and fascia that evoke the style of the famed “stinger” hood design and graphics that were offered with 1967 models equipped with the 427 engine. Also unique to this model are “427” hood badges. Each example is numbered and signed by Wil Cooksey, the Corvette assembly plant manager who is retiring after 15 years on the job, and comes with a certificate of authenticity. “The heritage of the 427 designation with the Corvette is legendary,” said Harlan Charles, Corvette product manager. “Recognizing the tie-in of the original 427 engine and the LS7’s 427-inch displacement has been on the Corvette team’s mind since the Z06 was introduced, and we’re thrilled to express it in this special model.” Available under order code Z44, this special Z06 enters production this spring. Only 427 will be offered in the United States and Canada, with 78 more exported outside North America. That’s a total of 505 production vehicles – the same number of horsepower produced by the LS7 engine. The special-edition Corvette carries a MSRP of $84,195 and includes the 3LZ premium equipment package with a custom, leather-wrapped interior. A navigation system is the only option ($1,750). As with other Corvette models, customer delivery is available at the Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, Ky. A breakdown of the 427 Limited Edition Z06’s unique content includes:

“Z06” sill platesThe 427 Limited Edition Z06 joins the Indy 500 Pace Car replica – available in coupe and convertible configurations – as the second limited-production Corvette model introduced for 2008, giving enthusiasts and collectors a wealth of choices. In January, Chevrolet also announced the 2009 Corvette ZR1, which enters production later this summer. “There’s never been a better time to be a Corvette enthusiast,” said Charles. “The performance and refinement are exemplary and special editions, like the 427 model, enrich the heritage of America’s sports car.” Corvette Z06 details The Corvette Z06 that is the foundation for the 427 Limited Edition offers carefully executed levels of capability and technology, making it one of the best performance values on the market. The Z06’s LS7 7.0L engine reintroduced the 427-cubic-inch engine to the Corvette lineup. It uses racing-derived lightweight technology, including titanium connecting rods and intake valves, to help boost horsepower and rpm capability – it is rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW).* The only transmission offered with the Z06 is a six-speed manual. In the car’s 3,162-pound (1,437 kg) package, the LS7 engine helps deliver 0-60 mph performance of 3.7 seconds in first gear, quarter-mile times of 11.7 seconds at 125 mph and a top speed of 198 mph (as recorded on Germany’s Autobahn) – the Z06 also circuited Germany’s famed N ü rburgring racetrack in a time of 7:43. The Z06 has a unique aluminum body structure for optimum stiffness and light weight for the fixed-roof body style. Perimeter rails are one-piece hydroformed aluminum members featuring cast suspension nodes, which replace many welded steel components on other Corvette models. Advanced structural composites featuring carbon fiber are bonded to the aluminum structure. Wider front wheelhouses, for example, are carbon composites and the passenger compartment floors combine carbon-fiber skins with an ultra-lightweight balsa wood core. A firm, race-proven suspension works harmoniously with large 18 x 9.5-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels and 275/35ZR18 tires in the front, and 19 x 12-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels with 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear to achieve lateral acceleration of more than 1 g. Complementing the suspension system and large rolling stock is an equally capable four-wheel disc brake system, consisting of 14-inch (355 mm) vented and cross-drilled front rotors and 13.4-inch (340 mm) vented and cross-drilled rear rotors. The front rotors are acted upon by large, red-painted six-piston calipers that use six individual brake pads. Individual brake pads are used because they deliver more equalized wear compared to what would otherwise be a pair of very long single-piece pads. For the rear brakes, four-piston calipers with four individual brake pads are used. A Delphi four-channel ABS system is standard, as is a very competent active handling system – complete with a Competitive Driving mode. History of the Corvette and the 427 engine The Chevrolet Mark IV V-8 debuted in the Corvette in 1965 and was dubbed the big-block, because it was physically larger in all respects than Chevy’s other V-8 engine, which became known as the small-block. In ’65, the big-block was offered in a 396-cubic-inch displacement, with a maximum rating of 425 gross horsepower (317 kW). In 1966, the big-block received larger cylinder bores and grew to its legendary 427-cubic-inch form. It came in two power levels: 390 hp (291 kW) and 425 hp. By 1967, the Corvette’s 427 engine was a legend in its own time and was offered with a unique induction system that featured an inline trio of two-barrel carburetors. Known as the “L71” (its order code), it was characterized by a large, chrome triangular air cleaner assembly. It was rated at 435 gross horsepower (324 kW). The ’67 big-block Corvettes were easily distinguished from their small-block brethren by a raised “stinger” hood. A handful of Corvettes with the “L88”-code 427 engine slipped out of the factory in 1967, each rated at 430 horsepower (321 kW), but the L88 would be more closely associated with the redesigned 1968 and ’69 models. The L88 breathed through a single four-barrel carburetor rather than the L71’s three two-barrels. The triple-carburetor induction system was still available, however, as the Corvette was offered with both the L88 and L71 versions of the 427. No less than six versions of the engine were offered in 1969, the final year for the 427. They included the L88, the L71 and a very rare ZL1 427 that was built with a lightweight aluminum cylinder block. Only two regular-production Corvettes were built with the ZL1 engine, putting them on the short list of the most collectible Corvettes in history. The big-block increased in size to 454 cubic inches in 1970, and the original big-block engine family exited the Corvette lineup after the 1974 model year. MAZDA Taiki

The Mazda Taiki, revealed at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show in October 2007, culminated Mazda's theme for the show "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom – Mazda's showroom today and in the future." The Mazda Taiki sets a new ideal for the front-engine rear-drive sports car of the future and continues the evolution of the Nagare design theme, following in the footsteps of the Mazda Nagare, Mazda Ryuga, and Mazda Hakaze concept vehicles. The challenge to create "a design that visually expresses the flow of air" was inspired by the image of a pair of Hagoromo—the flowing robes that enable a celestial maiden to fly in Japanese legend—floating down from the sky. Inspired by Japanese koinobori—the decorative "climbing carp streamers"—the notion of creating an Air-tube became the concept word for the interior design. As the fourth in the series, Mazda Taiki further advances and refines the theme through a fusion of the Nagare (flow) design concept and real-world technologies, such as a next-generation rotary engine and enhanced aerodynamic performance.
In developing the next-generation RENESIS, Mazda made a thoroughgoing revision of engine dimensions including the trochoid rotor housing, adopting a longer stroke and larger displacement of 1600cc (800cc x 2) aimed to raise thermal efficiency and boost torque at all engine speeds. By employing the Hydrogen RE design policy of a direct injection system and aluminium side housing, as well as various other measures, we are further promoting the rotary engine’s merits of light weight and compact size.

The Saab Aero X concept harnesses the power of Saab's aviation and Scandinavian roots to make a unique statement in performance car design. Conceived as a study to explore future design directions, its innovative features preview the development of an enhanced design language that will inspire future Saab products.

As you would expect from Saab, this dynamic two-seater sports coupé breaks with automotive design convention both outside and inside.

First, there are no doors…or windshield pillars. That's because the Saab Aero X adopts a cockpit canopy, just as you would see on a jet aircraft. It offers the Aero X pilot full 180 degree vision, and also facilitates entry and exit from its low-slung cabin.

Thrust for the all-wheel-drive Saab Aero X also comes from a powerplant with a difference. The 400 bhp, twin-turbo, BioPower V6 engine is fueled entirely by bioethanol, a sustainable energy source that is kinder to the environment by cutting fossil CO2 emissions. The 'green power' of this advanced engine gives new meaning to the phrase 'performance with responsibility'.

Inside, the Saab Aero X's cockpit also adds a new dimension to clean Scandinavian interior design by completely eliminating conventional dials and buttons. Instead, Saab has applied techniques derived from Swedish glass and precision instrument making, displaying data on glass-like acrylic 'clear zones' in graphic 3-D images.

All exterior and interior lighting is by LED (light-emitting diode), which has given the design team new freedoms to exploit the compact packaging benefits of a technology that will be featured increasingly in future Saab products.

With weight-saving carbon fiber bodywork, a lightweight powertrain, electronically-controlled suspension and all-wheel drive, the Saab Aero X is an exciting driver's car that promises a level of performance to match its looks. Computer simulations anticipate zero to 100 kph in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 kph (limited).

Despite being so tightly driver focused, the Aero X still offers surprising practicality, again, a quality you would expect to find in all Saab designs. That dramatically sculpted tail conceals a useful twin storage facility, with a conventional hatch opening and sliding drawer underneath.

"This study shows how the strength of the Saab brand heritage can inspire bold, innovative design," says Bryan Nesbitt, Executive Director, GM Design Europe. "As we move forward with new Saab product, we will remain focused on carefully cultivating this brand equity in the context of Scandinavian design values."

The Saab Aero X is the latest in series of concepts from Saab, each accentuating different brand qualities. These include the 'four-dimensional' 9X (IAA Frankfurt 2001), the 9-3X Cross-over Coupé (Detroit 2002) and the 9-3 Sport Hatch (IAA Frankfurt 2003).


NISSAN Round Box


The Nissan Round Box, with its compact convertible design, represents a new take on open-air motoring, providing exhilaration for all passengers - not just the driver - through its uniquely shared experience of fresh air stimulation, a sensation of speed and easy-to-use high-spec features. The Nissan Round Box features an environmentally friendly turbocharged direct injection gasoline engine mated to Nissan's advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). It is also equipped with a number of safety systems based on Nissan's Safety Shield* concept, including Around View Monitor and Distance Control Assist System (DCAS).


Yamaha Tesseract


Yamaha Tesseract Hybrid, Motorcycle for Superheroes/Badasses/Us?/No The Yamaha Tesseract concept for Tokyo Motor Show is not a motorcycle. Because it's way more awesome than a motorcycle.
Featuring 4 wheels for enhanced stability, the frame is apparently still not much bigger than a normal bike. And somewhere in there fits two different engines, one gasoline of undisclosed size and another electrical (to dual impress biker chicks and eco babes, though probably offering some impressive performance payoffs as well). The important note to remember is that the Tesseract is not a motorcycle. Please spread the word and make sure every wife knows it while we pray Yamaha actually puts the...vehicle...into production.
We're also hoping to see the Tesseract transform into a Gundam robot and fulfill its true destiny.


Toyota 1/X


The Toyota 1/X wants to redefine what it means to be environmentally conscious. The Toyota 1/X (pronounced "one-Xth") has the same interior space as the Prius but only weighs 420 kg. The Toyota 1/X combines fossil fuel consumption-reducing FFV technology and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 500cc displacement.


PUYO Honda 2007



The Honda PUYO represents a new idea in mobility that brings together ‘clean’, ‘safe’ and ‘fun’ functionality in an environmentally responsible, people-friendly minimalist design featuring an ultra-high efficiency, small frame and fuel cell technology to please both users and onlookers alike. Honda has released images of its PUYO Concept ahead of the car's Tokyo Motor Show debut. Designed as a 'Seamless Soft Box,' the PUYO uses a gel body to help protect pedestrians in case of an accident. According to Honda, "PUYO is a Japanese onomatopoeia that expresses the sensation of touching the vehicle's soft body." In addition, the soft gel body glows, aiding in nighttime visibility.The PUYO's interior is designed for maximum space and features an instrument panel monitor as well as a cloth dash that rises when the vehicle is started. The PUYO forgoes a standard steering wheel in favor of a more futuristic joystick.
The PUYO uses fuel cell technology and also features four-wheel steering, allowing the car to complete 360-degree turns in place.


Aston Martin Rapide 2009


Aston Martin is toying with the idea of building a four-door coupe-style sedan, as seems to be the rage among all the premium European brands. Aston has gone as far as displaying a prototype, featuring looks very much like the two-door DB9. Expect a future four-door to be powered by the same 450 hp 6.0-litre V12 as the DB9.


Cars design

The future design of cars is anyone's guess as it is up to the imagination of the designers to create and general public to accept what is brought forth. The good news is that the future design of cars may see radical advancements due to new advancements in drive technology.
For instance, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and electric cars have no internal combustion engine and bulky transmission to design a car around.
The fuel cell, batteries and electric motors can be placed in many different arrangements in the vehicles including underneath the floorboard opening up a world of future car design possibilities.
In addition, the future design of cars will also be dependent upon just what does propel the car? For instance what if the car we are referring to is a future flying car rather than an earthbound one. Engines and rotors will lend themselves to different future car design than will other types of engines for automobiles that run on the ground.
And, then there are design and technological advancements that have nothing to do with the propulsion method. For instance, the Audi RSQ was designed from the movie "I, Robot" starring Will Smith. One of the most unique design features of the Audi RSQ is that the wheels are spherical in shape as it does not use traditional wheels or tires.
The future design of cars may start in the college ranks as well. Take for instance Jonathan Putner's Daedalus, which won the Royal College of Art's Best Overall Concept Car.
Or the CLEVER vehicle prototype, which is only 1-meter wide, developed by the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.
With Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and a myriad of 3D animation software programs out there, designers are more capable than ever before of designing their own future cars. Whether or not any of these future designs of cars will ever become working prototypes is anyone's guess.
What is certain is that the future design of cars is a wide open field. With enough imagination, anything is possible.


Air Cars


Future air cars are actually more than a lot of hot air. There is actually substance to the claim that air cars are a future possibility. In fact, several future air cars have been demonstrated as prototype vehicles now.
For instance, MDI air cars are a reality. MDI has three different models, the MiniCAT (Compressed Air Technology), CityCAT and OneCAT are vehicles set to go into production sometime in 2007 and be in showrooms as early as summer 2008.

The first MDI air cars will likely be sold in India under the name Tata, produced by India's largest automaker in conjunction with MDI. The MDI engines have 4 two-stage pistons and a dual-energy system to propel the vehicles.
The MDI cars contain carbon fiber tanks, which are filled up with 4,500 psi of compressed air that turn the pistons. Since no infrastructure is yet in place to compress air to this degree at local filling stations, the MDI air cars come with their own onboard compressors.
The second company of note that is developing future air cars is the Energine Corporation. The Energine Corporation has already demonstrated a prototype parallel pneumatic-hybrid electric vehicle, which they are calling the PHEV car (Of course, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle people are also using PHEV for their acronym as well).
Nonetheless, the Energine PHEV car uses both a 2-stroke pneumatic piston engine and an electric motor to power the vehicle. The Energine PHEV contains a 4,350 psi compressed air tank and can achieve a top speed of 72mph.
Since air cars are zero emissions vehicles and there has been a lot of public emphasis on finding solutions to global warming and greenhouse gases lately, it is likely that the development of future air cars will continue for quite some time. Look for more manufacturers to jump on the future air car wagon as the technology is relatively simple and there is high public interest in these vehicles now.


Acura TSX


Acura will launch the second generation of its TSX sports sedan at the New York auto show next month -- and in advance of the big public party they've released this teaser photo of the new sedan.
The new TSX, Acura says, gets advances to its performance, styling, technology and safety -- pretty standard stuff for a vehicle once named to Car and Driver's 10Best list.
The TSX bears a clear resemblance to the new RL sedan shown at the Chicago auto show last week. And since its roots are in the European Honda Accord, which remains a four-cylinder vehicle, we expect the new TSX to stick with a version of Honda's global four-cylinder engine, although some reports indicate the TSX will be the first Honda to receive a new low-emissions diesel engine sometime in 2009.

With the Geneva Motor Show one month away, more debuts are trickling in. Our first is from one of the many design houses which get an equal opportunity at the show. It's the Maserati Chicane Concept, a design study by the Instituto Europeo di Design (IED) students for an entry level model.If the Chicane isn't radical enough, Pininfarina's Sintesi Concept looks to challenge many conservative ideas about how we view the automobile. This is their newest prototype since the Birdcage debuted three years ago.Mitsubishi are entering the hatchback segment with the Lancer Prototype-S. This release probably has a lot to do with the 3-door and 5-door models that have dominated the World Rally Championship in the last few years.We finish with a bevy of tuned supercars: RENNtech wins the horsepower war with their 695 bhp CL Coupe, Abt Sportsline finally give us pictures of their striking R8 and speedART showoff the BTR-XL 600 Cabriolet based on the 911 Turbo.
